The Steak Barn and Ice Skating at Old Down Country Park

Last weekend I was kindly invited down to Old Down Country Park, in Tockington, Bristol, for a session on their ice rink.
Now, if, like me, you have a fear of falling over, then I’m not sure ice skating is the best idea. I KNEW I hated the thought of slipping so I have no idea why I thought ice skating would be any kind of fun for me. But we have to try these things for ourselves so we know for the future. Silly Sam!
Sure enough, it took me around 20 minutes to even consider setting foot on the rink, even though I was kitted out in skates and watching my 16 year old daughter, skating effortlessly around the ice albeit laughing at her petrified mother.
With only 10 minutes left of the session, that’s right, I had spent the entire time contemplating doing it that I wasted an entire session! So after 5 minutes of manoeuvring and dithering, I was finally on the ice. Resembling a scene from Bambi, I was wobbly legged and gripping on to the sides as I aimlessly tried to ‘skate’ around the edge. It’s safe to say that ice skating is definitely not for me!

Picture purely to certify that I got on to the ice!

The rink itself was large and well covered, perfect for this wet December. With the addition of a Christmas tree and festive fairy lights that gave it some added warmth. Having come during the evening, once the park itself had closed, I noticed there were traditional style wooden stalls that sold a range of hot snacks, similar to those you’d find at a Christmas market.

After our session, we then headed over to the on-site Steak Barn for our dinner.
Having not been given a time slot for our visit, we did arrive around 30 minutes before the kitchen had opened but nevertheless, we were welcomed with the offer of drinks at our table and the waiting staff couldn’t have been more attentive.
This rustic Steak Barn, with stone walks and timber beams was wonderfully cosy in such a horrid wet and windy Saturday night. With more fairy lights, Christmas decorations and a big log burner, we felt warmed and at home. The Barn also had a family nook, with activities to keep children entertained and big comfortable sofas for the parents. Dogs on leads were also welcomed, much to the delight of my daughter who got to smooch with a furry guest on the next table.

Ordering our food, we enjoyed a plate of complimentary toast whilst we waited. Thick slabs of hot, smoky bread with a generous knob of smoked salted butter.

I’m so easily pleased. Bread and butter is a sure fire way to keeping me happy!

For my main course, I ordered the rib eye steak (£19) which came with chunky chips and a sauce of my choice. I went for the Stilton butter of course!

The steak was perfectly cooked to my liking- medium rare, with a more than generous knob of the Stilton butter. So much so, that my daughter took some for meal. She opted for one of the few vegetarian options, the caramelised onion and Brie pie (£9.95) but was sadly disappointed. With only the slightest hint of either elements, her pie was more pepper, tomato and spinach and struggled with a strange aftertaste. There was a very limited choice for both vegan and vegetarian customers which let the meal down slightly.

Overall, our visit to Old Down Country Park was a positive one. The staff were fantastic and a real credit to this place. A huge thank you and mention to the lovely girl that looked after us at the rink. She was patient, warm and very friendly.
The rink will be open throughout December at the hours listed below, and through to the 23rd of January, although I would suggest checking the website for the listed days and times of these. Prices for the skating are £7.50 for adults and £5.50 for children. You can buy tickets online or at the Barn Cafe during opening hours. https://olddownestate.co.uk/events/ice-rink-real-ice/

Christmas Snacking with Tyrells

So usually I'm posting new outfits, recent purchases or an event I've been to, but today I'm talking snacks. More specifically, crisps and popcorn. I'd like to think my body is chistled out of a combination of the two and with Christmas lurking around the corner, I thought 'why not!'

The fab guys over at Tyrrells  kindly let me sample their two new seasonal flavours. Three Bird Roast crisps and Bellini Poshcorn. These just scream Christmas and no doubt in 6 weeks I'll be slumming it in stretchy pants, reaching for a bag whilst watching cheesey movies under a blanket OR I could be dressed in my favourite party frock, heading to a family house party, armed with my new decadent flavoured snacks. My family loved the Three Bird Roast flavour best and the Poshcorn was actually fizzy! It was very subtle in flavour too, perfect to accompany drinks.

Seasoned to perfection, Tyrrells is giving traditional roast turkey a splendiferous twist, with the traditional Christmas trio of roast chicken, duck and turkey brought to life on a characterfully curly Tyrrells crisp. Avoid 'foul-tempers' at Christmas and fill up your bowls with this entertaining sharing sized pack!

It's Tyrrells Poshcorn Cocktail hour! Put the glamour into Christmas with this fun, frivolous and ever so slightly fizzy cocktail delight from the popconnoiseurs at Tyrrells. Available in generous sharing sized 75g pack, Bellini Poshcorn is carefully popped in small batches at Tyrrells Court Farm using gold standard kernels, Tyrrells Bellini Poshcorn is available from CoOp, Ocado and independents nationwide.

OOTD My Festive Flapper Look

So we are now officially in the Christmas countdown, with less than a week to go. Presents are purchased, tree is up, the cheesy films have started and it's time to catch up for festive lunch dates with friends. But what do I wear?! Novelty jumpers are just not my cup of tea, and normal duties are waiting for me at home after lunch, so I need something casual but glam. Something....Sam!

I bought this stunning jumpsuit AGES ago and never really wore it. (I seem to say this often in my posts and my heaving wardrobes can back me up!)
Long sleeves to keep the cold away, black velvet to keep up the glam side but worn with chunky shoes and simple accessories/make up and I have a winning combo. I had the most hideous roots when I took these photos so I felt that a cover up was the only solution. Think the turban set the outfit off perfectly!

Basic pearls were from Primark, tights are Asda, turban is from eBay but I attached a clip on earring to the front, shoes are also EBay.
Although this particular playsuit is no longer available, Asos have some beautiful ones in right now so you can still create this look X

Everything5pounds Velveteen Dream

When the ever wonderful Leah of www.justmeleah.co.uk announced that she had stumbled upon a cute little velvet dress, my little ears pricked up and had to check it out for myself. Oh My Wow!
It was everything I had in mind for wearing at Christmas. Deep red; Yes! Dreamy fabric; Yes! Available in my size? Yes! Yes! Yes!

I decided to order the 20/22 just to be on the safe side with sizing as I had never ordered from Everything5pounds before and once it arrived, I was delighted that I had made the right choice.
The dress has 3/4 sleeves, perfect for avoiding the enevitable gravy dip that I seem to manage most Christmas meals. The length was spot on. No flashing of pants when bending over but not long enough to make me feel frumpy.

I teamed this dress with suspender detail tights from Asos, found here. And a pair of heeled, cleated boots I found on EBay.
This gorgeous dress also comes in black and can be found here. X

All that glitters ain't gold. Christmas Day Selfie!

Christmas Day was a crazy whirlwind of watching the kids opening their presents, stopping my toddler from consuming her body weight in chocolate bears, restraining myself from hitting my mother and cooking like a chef on speed. I did not have the time for outfit posts! But I did so a quick cheeky selfie!

Thought I would show you this amazingly cute GOLD top. Yes. Gold! I have never worn gold but now I must own more! I found it in Primark, tucked away in the shit corner of unloved items for a mere £3. I am totally kicking myself that I didn't buy the green version as it looks killer on. I wore it with a simple plain black bodycon skirt from Asos and tights. The necklace was a cheap China job from EBay

Festive Cheer- the start of Christmas outfit posts

Christmas to me has always meant the same thing year in, year out. Family times and lots of food. Sadly, my fathers suicide seven years ago, one week before Christmas, blew festive times out of the water.
Then last year something changed. I realised he would of hated us sitting around being glum. Now instead of mourning his loss, we celebrate and be thankful that we had what we did and continue in the way he would of wanted.

Following on from my latest winter shop in Primark, I picked up this cute little sparky jumper. I'm hesitant to buy wooly tops in fear they'll make me look like the Honey Monster.

But tucked in to this soft net skirt, it really works without looking too bulky. The only thing I'm struggling with, is the itches. On a scale of 1-10 in the itch factor, this is an 11. Not so bad after I popped a vest on underneath though.
The skirt, which admittidly, I have no idea where I got it from as its been sat, unloved, in the very depths of my wardrobe. Chunky heels are Primark, soft collar necklace is from EBay as is the unicorn clutch bag. (Can I note that although it was listed as a clutch bag, it has enough room for a lipstick, a phone and bank cards. Tiny!!)
